Garage door won't close: start at the photo eyes

The opener is not being awkward. It is refusing to close because a federally mandated safety circuit is reporting a broken beam, and it is usually right.

A garage door won't close in almost every case because the photoelectric safety sensors, mounted within six inches of the floor on both sides of the opening, are reporting a broken beam. Realigning them costs nothing and takes two minutes, and the opener light usually tells you that is the fault before you look.

The photo eyes, and why they win every argument

Why does the opener refuse rather than just close?

Because it is legally required to. Federal rules have required entrapment protection on residential openers since the early 1990s, and the photo eyes are that protection. Any interruption of the beam cancels the close cycle by design.

They sit low deliberately, at a height that catches a child rather than a car bumper. That same height is why a bike, a bin or a foot knocks them out of alignment so easily.

So when a garage door won't close and nothing is visibly in the way, the beam is the first place to look and usually the last.

    Both units carry an indicator light. One steady light and one that is off or flickering means the beam is not landing, and that is your answer.

    A fogged, dusty or cobwebbed lens produces exactly the same symptom as a misaligned bracket, and it costs nothing to rule out first.

On the sensors themselves, one unit sends and one receives. A steady light on both is the confirmation you want. An off or flickering receiver LED means the beam is not landing.

Align them properly in two minutes

  • Loosen the wing nut on the receiving bracket, just enough to move it.
  • Move slowly in tiny increments and watch the LED rather than sighting down the sensor.
  • Hold and tighten so the sensor does not shift as the nut goes back on.
  • Test twice, because a beam that only holds when nothing moves will drop out again.

The afternoon sun case

This one is missing from every ranking page and it explains a symptom people find maddening.

Direct low sunlight falling on the receiving sensor can saturate it so it cannot distinguish the infrared beam from the ambient light. The door closes perfectly all morning and refuses from about four o'clock, and nothing appears to be wrong.

A small shade or visor above the sensor solves it permanently. So does rotating the sensor slightly within its bracket so the lens is not facing the low sun directly.

Cold weather, grease and close force

A door that only misbehaves in winter is usually not broken either.

Cold thickens the lubricant on rollers and hinges and increases the resistance the opener meets on the way down. The opener reads that resistance as an obstruction and reverses, which looks identical to a sensor fault from the doorway.

Lubricating before the season is the fix. A small seasonal close force adjustment is the second one, and it should be small.

Do not solve this with force

Winding the close force up until the door pushes through the resistance defeats the auto-reverse system that federal rules require. That system exists so a closing door reverses when it meets an obstruction, and an obstruction is not always a bin bag. Adjust in small increments and stop as soon as the door behaves.

Travel limits and what happens if you overdo it

If the door touches down and immediately reverses, the down travel limit is usually set slightly too far.

The door meets the floor, the opener keeps driving, and the resistance registers as an obstruction. Adjust the limit in small increments and run a full cycle between each one. Two or three careful adjustments beats one large one every time.

Can you force the door closed?

Yes, by holding the wall button down continuously, which closes the door on constant pressure while the sensors report a fault. It exists so you can secure a building at night, not as a repair, and the door should not be left in service that way.

Use it to lock up, then fix the sensors in daylight. Constant pressure operation means you are the safety system, and you cannot be that at three in the morning.

Garage door won't close and the sensors are fine

Solid LEDs on both units genuinely does rule the sensor circuit out. What remains is short.

  • Track obstruction: a bolt, a bent section, or something wedged where the door binds.
  • A damaged roller: binding at one specific point in the travel.
