Burning electrical smell: what to do in the next five minutes
This is the fastest-moving fault on the site. Overheating insulation gives off odour before it ignites anything, so the smell is a warning with a short and unpredictable fuse.
A burning electrical smell is overheating polymer: melting wire insulation, an outlet body, or a circuit board. It means a component is at fire temperature right now, and ESFI puts US home electrical fires at roughly 51,000 a year with nearly 500 deaths.
The first decision is not what is causing it. It is whether you should be in the building.
First: is this a leave-the-house situation?
When does a burning electrical smell mean evacuate?
Any visible smoke or flame, a smell that is strengthening, or a smell coming from inside a wall, a ceiling or the panel that you cannot locate. In those cases leave and call 911. A faint smell traced to one appliance you have unplugged does not need evacuation.

Do not investigate a visible fire. Get everyone out, close doors behind you, and call from outside. Fire crews carry thermal cameras that find a smouldering connection inside a wall.

Anything on the suspect circuit, starting with heat-producing appliances and extension leads. Do not pull a plug that is hot or scorched; kill the circuit instead.

Kill the circuit from a dry position
Dry floor, dry hands, one hand. Switch off the breaker for that area. If you cannot tell which circuit it is, switch off the main.

Open windows. Do not stand over a hot fitting breathing the fumes while you investigate. Call a licensed electrician with the circuit already dead.
What a burning electrical smell actually is
It is the odour of polymer breaking down under heat. Wire insulation, the plastic body of a receptacle, and the resin on a circuit board all give off distinct chemical smells well before anything ignites.
Most people describe it as sharp, acrid and chemical, like burning plastic or hot rubber. A fishy or urine-like note is also common and surprises people, because it does not smell like burning at all. That one comes from certain heated plastics and older components breaking down.
The important property is that the smell arrives before the fire, not with it. That is what makes it worth acting on rather than waiting to see.
Never put water on an electrical fire
Water conducts. Throwing it at an energised fire routes current back along the stream to whoever is holding the bucket, and it spreads a burning appliance rather than smothering it. If there is fire, leave and call 911. A Class C extinguisher is the only correct tool, and using one is still second to getting out.
Smells that are not an electrical fault
Not every burning smell is a fault, and the top-ranking pages never say so, which sends people to the panel for no reason.
Seasonal burn-off. The first cold night of the year, when heating runs for the first time in months, is the single most common false alarm. Dust on a heat exchanger or an element burns off over about an hour and then stops.
New appliance cure. Ovens, space heaters and hair dryers give off a manufacturing smell on first use. It fades and does not return.
Overworked motor. A vacuum with a blocked filter, a bathroom fan clogged with lint, or a fridge with a jammed condenser fan smells hot without being an electrical fault as such. It still needs the appliance switched off.
Something in the ductwork. Debris or a dead animal on a heat exchanger smells organic rather than chemical. Unpleasant, and not a fire risk.
The test that separates these from a real fault: a harmless burn-off fades and does not come back, and nothing on the circuit is warm. A real fault recurs, and something near it is hot.
Where the smell usually comes from
Four locations account for most genuine cases, and they are worth checking in this order because they are ordered by how likely they are to be the source.
Outlets and switch plates. Feel each one on the suspect circuit with the back of a hand. Warmth or discolouration is the answer. The CPSC records receptacles as being involved in around 5,300 fires a year in the US.
Extension leads and power strips. Especially under a rug, behind furniture, or carrying a heater. Daisy-chained strips are a classic.
Light fittings. Over-wattage bulbs in enclosed fittings cook the wiring in the rose. Recessed downlights buried in loft insulation do the same.
The panel itself. A smell at the panel is the most serious version, because it usually means a loose termination is arcing on a main conductor.
Is the smell itself toxic?

The practical rule is simple: open windows, work quickly, and do not treat the smell as something to sniff around and identify at close range. If there is any visible smoke at all, everyone leaves and the investigation stops.
Smelling burning with nothing there
This is one of the most common variants of this search, and it has two very different explanations.
The first is that a smell outlasts the event that caused it. Soft furnishings, carpet and curtains hold an odour for hours after a brief overheat, so the fault may have been real and may already have stopped, which does not mean it will not recur.
The second is that the smell is not in the house. A persistent phantom burning smell with no physical source is a recognised medical symptom, and it is a question for a clinician rather than an electrician. Rule out the house first, methodically, then stop looking at the house.
Can I sleep in the house tonight?
If the source was never found, no. That is the whole answer, and it is uncomfortable to give because it usually means an after-hours call.
If you traced it to one appliance, unplugged it, and there is no smell anywhere else in the house, that is a different situation and it will keep until morning. Isolate the circuit anyway.
Test every smoke alarm before anyone sleeps either way. ESFI reports 65 percent of home fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke detector, which makes a tested alarm the single most valuable object in the building tonight. If you also had a breaker that keeps tripping on the same circuit, treat the two symptoms as one fault.
