What the cost covers
Sewage backup cleanup is Category 3 work at roughly $7 to $7.50 per square foot, about double clean-water restoration. The difference is containment, protective equipment, disposal and the volume thrown away.
This is Category 3 water
Almost every instinct is wrong. Mopping spreads it, walking through it distributes it, and the HVAC circulates it. Doing nothing for an hour while you organize beats starting immediately.
How the category is defined
The classification is not a judgement about how dirty the water looks. Under ANSI/IICRC S500 it is defined by origin: water backing up from beyond any trap, regardless of visible content or color.
Restoration instructor Darren Foote makes the point that appearance is misleading: you can have pristine, beautiful, crystal-clear water that could kill you.
The trap test
A trap holds a plug of water to block sewer gas, and the test is whether water pushed back up from beyond it.
That is what a plumber establishes, and it sets the protective equipment, the tear-out list and the price.
When a storm is the cause
If this arrived with a storm, Foote’s view is that a river overflow can be worse than a sewage overflow: the sanitary sewer is overwhelmed at the same time and the river adds fertiliser and animal waste.
