Electricity before water
Cut the electricity first, before touching the water; most lists open with the water. Cleanup commonly runs $2,000 to $7,000, average near $4,000, and the drying window is 24 to 48 hours.
Water Damage · Basement
Flooded basement, what to do first: kill the power, then decide what kind of water it is. Cleanup commonly runs $2,000 to $7,000, average near $4,000 (Bob Vila, read 2026-07-22). Standing water and a live circuit is the combination that kills people, so put safety first.

The first hour
Isolate the circuits before anyone steps in. If the panel is down there and you cannot reach it dry, call the power company.
A supply failure stops at the main valve. Groundwater stops when the weather does.
Wide shots, then close shots, including the water line and stored belongings. Ninety seconds now saves an argument later.
Pump or wet vacuum the standing water first. Air movers and a dehumidifier are what dry a basement.
“Safety is the priority. Make sure you turn off the power before stepping into your basement if possible… I stepped right into the water with bare feet. Got lucky.”
A flooded basement what to do sequence depends on order. Photograph to document the damage before you extract, and assess damage by opening cavities rather than looking at the floor. The water damage guide covers how to quickly dry, clean and sanitize what stays.
Here is the circular problem nobody writes about: the pump that would clear your basement runs on the circuit you just switched off.
There is no clean answer, and pretending otherwise is how people get hurt: a generator running outdoors, a battery-backup pump if one is installed, or a manual pump run from a dry upstairs outlet.
One homeowner who documented his own flooded basement found the pump was not the failure: the discharge pipe could not move water as fast as it arrived, and that is the part nobody inspects.
To prevent future floods his list was plumbing rather than pumping: floor-level water alarms, a backup pump, a larger discharge pipe, regrading, and bigger gutters.
The visible water is not the affected area. He saved most of his floor planks, lost the underlayment, and found fresh mold under the bathtub only after it came out.
The boundary of the damage is established by opening things, not by where the puddle stopped.
Household fans and an open window will not do the same job. Basements are the hardest space to dry: cool, poorly ventilated and often below the dew point of the outside air.
Hold humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50 percent (EPA mold guidance, read 2026-09-05). A cheap hygrometer is the whole toolkit.
Material decides what you save and what you throw out, not sentiment.

If the source was a pipe, get the plumber to state in writing that the failure was sudden, which often separates a paid claim from a refused one. Detail is on our page on what insurance covers.
If the basement floods during heavy rain every time, that is a different problem: see our page on how to prevent basement flooding after rain.

Read the category rows rather than the headline range: clean water and sewage in the same basement are a factor of two apart.

While Florida permitted these agreements, emergency work carried a ceiling, the only published figure for what this job should cost.
An assignee responding to an emergency could not take an assignment of benefits worth more than $3,000 or one percent of the dwelling limit (Florida Statutes s. 627.7152, read 2026-09-05), and every agreement gave fourteen days to rescind.
Set that against mitigation invoices, which run past it. The cap applied to the 2019 to 2022 window, so it is a comparison rather than current law.

Browse all guidesMove important items up rather than out: paperwork, photographs and anything electrical, into a dry area above the water line, after the power is isolated.
Clean water caught within about 48 hours can be extracted, dried and re-laid; the padding is binned. A flooded carpet soaked by gray or black water is flood cleanup for disposal, and no attempt to sanitize and deodorize changes that.
Isolate power from a dry position first. Then stop the source, photograph everything, extract, and get air moving. Drying beats the mold clock, not tidying.
Three to five days with commercial air movers and a dehumidifier running continuously, longer behind panelling. Materials dried within 24 to 48 hours mostly do not grow mold.
It depends where the water came from. A burst supply pipe is generally covered as sudden and accidental; groundwater is flooding, which policies exclude, and sewer backup needs an endorsement.
Every flooded basement what to do list ends at the same three numbers: a restoration contractor, a plumber if the source is a pipe, and the power company if you cannot isolate the electricity. That is who to call for a flooded basement. Call the insurance company early, because emergency mitigation is normally claimable.
Small volumes of clean water, yes, with a wet vacuum, fans and a dehumidifier, if you start within hours. Sewage or water in cavities is a job for basement flooding cleanup companies.
Commonly $2,000 to $7,000 with an average near $4,000 (Bob Vila, read 2026-07-22), and severe standing-water jobs run far higher. Restoration is priced by category: $3 to $4 per square foot for clean water, $7 to $7.50 for black water.
